| Although the first discoveries of the pre-Roman occupation of the city of Lisbon date back to the beginning of the 20th century, only with the establishment of the urban archaeology activity this moment was clearly confirmed. The emergency excavation of São João da Praça street, in the eastern slope of the castle hill resulted in the discovery of well
preserved pre-Roman layers, ranging from the 3rd century BC until Roman republican era.
Among the material, a significant umber of amphorae were recovered. This fact remains as a clear evidence of the Olisipo harbour relevance, namely in terms of economic dynamism since the 7th century BC until the arrival of the first Roman army to the Tagus valley. |
